Martin Kleist, owner and founder of Design of Illusion
Even as a child, I was fascinated by the interplay of creativity and craftsmanship. I built my first creature costumes early on and quickly knew: I don't just want to experience special effects – I want to create them myself.
After my hairdressing apprenticeship, I completed my training as a makeup artist at the renowned Hasso von Hugo School in Berlin. Following this, I worked for over five years at the Theater des Westens, where I not only gained classical stage experience but also increasingly specialized in special effects and prosthetics.
In 2008, I founded Design of Illusion, my own studio for SFX makeup, prosthetics, and special effects. Since then, I have dedicated myself exclusively to developing cinematic special effects – for film, television, streaming, and stage.
I work with a flexible team of experienced specialists who join as needed for each project. This allows us to create tailor-made solutions – from individual pieces to large-scale production.
Design of Illusion is now based in Schleswig-Holstein – however, we are still regularly available in Berlin as usual and look forward to your inquiries from the capital and beyond!

Special Effects Make-up auf höchstem Niveau
Design of Illusion steht seit über 15 Jahren für Spezialeffekte, die vor der Kamera überzeugen. Gegründet und geleitet von Martin Kleist, haben wir in dieser Zeit an nationalen und internationalen Produktionen mitgewirkt – darunter Projekte wie Tribes of Europa, Iron Sky 2 und wie z.B. die Netflix-Produktion Kleo. Dieser Erfahrungsschatz fließt in jedes Projekt ein, das wir übernehmen.
Unser Leistungsspektrum umfasst komplexe Prothetik, hyperrealistische Silikon-Dummys, Wunden- und Alterungs-Make-up sowie maßgeschneiderte Spezialkostüme und Requisiten. Je nach Anforderung stellen wir ein flexibles Team aus erfahrenen nationalen und internationalen Freelancern zusammen – so passt sich die Crew der Produktion an, nicht umgekehrt.
Für schnelle und unkomplizierte Lösungen bieten wir darüber hinaus einen umfangreichen Verleih an Requisiten und Effektmaterialien an. Unser neu entwickelter Tattoo-FX-Katalog richtet sich an Produktionen und Kolleginnen und Kollegen, die hochwertige temporäre Tattoos für den professionellen Filmeinsatz suchen – präzise in der Ausführung, zuverlässig auf Set.
Unser Studio ist in Schleswig-Holstein ansässig, wir sind jedoch regelmäßig in Berlin und bundesweit tätig. Für Abdrücke und Vorbereitungsarbeiten vor Ort arbeiten wir mit einem Netzwerk an Partnerstudios zusammen – für maximale Flexibilität ohne Abstriche bei der Qualität.
