Martin Kleist graduated from secondary school in 1996.

He then began an apprenticeship as a hairdresser, which he successfully completed in 1999 with the journeyman's examination.

In 2000 he performed his civilian service and subsequently worked as a hairdresser for another year.

In 2002 he began his training as a makeup artist at the renowned Hasso von Hugo Makeup Artist School, which he completed with a diploma in August 2003.

From 2003 to 2008, Martin Kleist was a permanent member of the makeup team at the Theater des Westens in Berlin. During this time, he gained extensive experience in theatre, opera and musical productions.

In 2008, under his birth name Schäper, he founded the company Design of Illusion (DOI-FX), specializing in special effects, makeup and character design for film, television, theatre and advertising.

Since 2017 he has performed under the name Martin Kleist – for this reason he can be found on IMDb under both names.

Since 2014, Martin Kleist has been appointed as an examiner in the IHK examination committee for makeup artists and contributes his professional expertise to the training of future makeup artists.
